The Path of Wisdom and Compassion

A Conversation with Venerable Thubten Chodron

November 17th, 2024 • 9–11am Pacific Time / 5–7pm London Time • Online via Zoom

Overview

Join Venerable Thubten Chodron for a fascinating conversation as she shares the behind-the-scenes journey of an extraordinary venture.

This year marks the completion of the ten-volume Library of Wisdom and Compassion series, co-authored by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Venerable Thubten Chodron.

This decades-long project aims to present the Dalai Lama’s practical approach to the Buddha’s teachings, guiding Western audiences through the complete path to full awakening in a clear and comprehensive manner, peppered with his own unique outlook.

This series is an important bridge from introductory to profound topics for those seeking an in-depth explanation from a contemporary perspective.

In this session offered by the Contemplative Consciousness Network (the CCN), Venerable Thubten Chodron, a long-term disciple of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, will reveal the process of bringing this series to life.

She will share her personal experiences of working closely with the Dalai Lama, offering unique insights and anecdotes. She will also provide a teaching on the key topics covered in the series, helping our understanding of the Dharma from this remarkable collaborative effort.

The Teacher

thubten chodron

Venerable Thubten Chodron is an author, teacher, and the founder and abbess of Sravasti Abbey, one of the first Tibetan Buddhist training monasteries for Western monks and nuns in America. She grew up in Los Angeles, graduated with honors in History from the University of California at Los Angeles, and did graduate work in education at the University of Southern California. She taught elementary school before becoming a Buddhist and ordaining as a Tibetan Buddhist nun in 1977.

Venerable Chodron has studied extensively with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan masters. Before starting Sravasti Abbey, she was the resident teacher and spiritual adviser at Amitabha Buddhist Center in Singapore and Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle. She has started a prison Dharma outreach project at the Abbey, through which she teaches people in prisons. For several years, she served on the board of Youth Emergency Services, a local organization to help homeless teens.

Venerable Chodron also teaches worldwide and is known for her warm, practical, and humorous explanations of how to apply Buddhist teachings in daily life. She has published many books on Buddhist philosophy and meditation in several languages, and is currently assisting His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the writing and publication of The Library of Wisdom and Compassion, a multi-volume series of teachings on the Buddhist path. Her Buddhism for Beginners and Open Heart, Clear Mind are widely recommended introductory books.

Visit thubtenchodron.org for a media library of her teachings, and sravastiabbey.org to learn more about the Abbey. You can also tune in for daily Dharma talks on Sravasti Abbey’s Youtube channel, and follow Venerable Chodron and Sravasti Abbey on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
